Citi Open and Monumental Sports Network Team Up for 50th Celebration Series

by Sarah Carr

Monumental Sports Network shares details on what fans can expect from the series.

Monumental Sports Network and Citi Open are working together to bring their viewers a special 50th anniversary series during the week of the Citi Open, July 28 through August 5. This commemoration series will highlight the tournament’s legacy by providing content through the Network’s app, website and social media, including interviews with co-founders, key influencers and more. We contacted Monumental Sports Network’s Jennifer Matthews, Senior Director of Marketing and Caitlin Mangum, Director of Content & Programming, to find out what else fans can expect from the series.

Washington Life: How did the 50th Celebration Series come about?

Monumental Sports Network: In working with the Citi Open last year, they mentioned this was a special year for them so we thought it would be great to create unique content to live on our platform for our fans. We then worked with Geico who is a partner of both the Citi Open and Monumental Sports and Entertainment about sponsoring it.

WL: What type of content can people expect from the Series?

MSN: Monumental Sports Network has produced a documentary about the history and evolution of the Citi Open, from when it was founded by Donald Dell and Arthur Ashe to today. The Citi Open is ripe with history, being the longest running ATP Tour event in the U.S. The inaugural tournament in 1969 became one of the first open professional tennis tournaments held in the United States. It is also the only tournament held in a national park, and one of the few in which a men’s and women’s event is held in the same place. The documentary includes interviews with past champions and current players, as well as archival footage and interviews with Donald Dell, Andre Agassi and Harold Solomon.

WL: What is something people might not know about this collaboration?

MSN: Monumental Sports Network and the Citi Open have teamed up the past 2 years to bring subscribers live and on-demand streaming of the Wild Card Challenge. This year to help celebrate the Citi Open 50th Celebration and Washington DC as its home, we partnered to create a documentary about it that features past players such as Andre Agassi (5x winner), Harold Solomon (1974 winner), Donald Dell (founder), Brian Gottfried (1980 winner) and Michael Wilbon. We are also giving fans the opportunity to purchase the Ultimate DC Sports Package which includes tickets to the Citi Open as well as a discounted VIP Membership to Monumental Sports Network.

WL: Is there anything else you want readers to know about the partnership and the Network?

MSN: Monumental Sports Network is a first-ever, direct-to-fan digital regional sports platform that provides live and on-demand sports coverage, original programming, VIP members-only events, and discounted merchandise online and through the app on mobile and streaming devices including Roku, FireTV, Apple TV, XBox One and more. In addition to the partnership, we are hosting a Citi Open Tailgate Party for VIP Network members where they’ll be able to enjoy a live match, delicious bites and sips, and the opportunity to meet with the tournament’s star athletes.
