The Domingo Gala for the 21st Century

Wondrous music filled the Kennedy Center's Opera House the evening of the Domingo Gala for the 21stCentury, held on March 12th. The elegant affair served as the perfect occasion to feast and fete thegreat Placido Domingo, world-renowned tenor and presiding Washington Opera Artistic Director. Dappergentlemen in black-tie attire and ladies dressed in their finest gowns and jewels began the evening witha musical extravaganza including a performance by the guest of honor, as well as performances from suchcelebrated talents as soprano Tatiana Pavlovskaya, and prima ballerina Uliana Lopatkina, both of theKirov; the Met’s primo baritone Dwayne Croft; leading Korean soprano Hei-Kyung Hong; American sopranoSusan Patterson; and bass Orlin Anastassov. Kirov conductor Valery Gergiev shared the conductor’s podiumwith the Washington Opera’s own acclaimed Music Director Heinz Fricke, conducting the Kennedy CenterOpera House Orchestra. Under the stars, a fabulous gala dinner followed the concert, on the roof terraceof the Kennedy Center. (See additional coverage in “Around Town.”)
