White House State Dinner
The King and I

170 guests joined President and Mrs. Clinton for a white-tie State Dinner honoring Spain’s King JuanCarlos and Queen Sofia. Attendees took advantage of the formal occasion to display their best and mostelegant attire. The eclectic guest list included opera superstar and native Spanish citizen PlacidoDomingo (who performed several selections for his king and queen), Prince and Princess Michael of Greece,Wizards owner Abe Pollin, artist Dale Chihuly, and Spanish soccer star Kasey Keller. Numerous senatorsand representatives were also in attendance, as well as Karenna Gore Schiff, daughter of Vice PresidentGore. For the five-course dinner, White House executive chef Walter Scheib prepared pheasant and morelconsomme and dumplings of foie gras, lobster and Maine shrimp with saffron risotto, grilled rack of lambwith orange and rosemary sauce, and a two-foot-tall dessert of citrus fruits and sherbet within awhite-chocolate box. The King and Queen were in good spirits throughout the evening, and even stayed lateto chat with guests and pose for photographs before retiring for the night.
