Vivacious Susie Kay, the founder of HoopDreams, reminded supporters, students andmembers of Congress of the organization's manyaccomplishments at a benefit on the Hill onMarch 23. Senator Jack Reed was presented withthe first annual Paul Wellstone HumanitarianAward for his longstanding efforts to advanceeducation and opportunity for his state, this city,and the nation.

Only in its seventh year,Hoop Dreams hasbecome one of the most effective local charities,giving out over 700 scholarships and institutinga highly successful mentor training program. In2001, Hoop Dreams Mentoring Program studentshad a college acceptance rate of 95% compared tothe average of 33% for D.C. public school students.
