Washington Project
for the Arts\Corcoran Art Hot artists and local collectors attended the Washington Project for the Arts\Corcoran (WPA\C) 2004 Art Auction and Gala held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art on January 31. Works by local artists were selected by five curators, including Chan T. Chao, professor and photographer; Paul Roth, Corcoran photography curator; Andy Grundberg, teacher and photo critic; Virginia Shore, Senior Curator of the U.S. Department of State’s Art in the Embassies Program; and Grady T. Turner, a New York-based curator and art critic. Turner (formerly the curator for the Museum of Sex in New York) organized his selections to reflect the body, using the works of such artists as Annie Sprinkle, a former adult filmmaker, and Spencer Tunick, who specializes in nude photography. Grundberg chose dramatic and poignant photographs from the Starn Twins, Reagan Louie, Joe Mills and Colby Caldwell. Shore chose inspirational works by artists such as photojournalists Simon Bruty and Lucian Perkins and painter Benjamin Edwards. Founded in 1996 and based
out of the Corcoran, the WPA\C is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting
contemporary art in the D.C. area. The organization hosts exhibits, film
series and lectures throughout the city. The gala and auction raised $225,000.
