“Mission
Possible” VIP Reception and Gala
NARSAD and The Spy Museum Raise $1.4 Million for Mental Illness
The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD)’s
first annual gala was held at the International Spy Museum on February
7. The event kicked off the “Mission Possible: Hope Through Research” weekend
and was followed by NARSAD’s Washington Scientific Symposium at George
Washington University on February 8. The cuisine was served by Zola, which
received high marks, especially the mashed potatoes served in martini glasses
with topping choices of lobster, caviar, bacon, cheese and more.
The “Mission Possible Silent Auction” offered bidders experiences
with former spies, intelligence officers, espionage experts and scientists
(see “Around
Town” for more examples.) A New York lunch with Sylvia Nasar, author
of the book and consultant to the Oscar-winning movie “A Beautiful
Mind,” was
the topbid item at the event, which raised $1.4 million for scientific
research on brain disorders. Since sponsors covered expenses for the entire
weekend, 100 percent of the money raised will provide research grants, which are reviewed
by an 82-member Scientific Council. Currently, two Nobel Prize recipients
serve on the council.
