3rd Substance & Style Kick-off Party
Celebrating Substance, Style and Signature Cuisine

Washington Life and Saks Fifth Avenue hosted a party at Palette Restaurant to kick off the 3rd Annual Men and Women of Substance and Style Awards. Guests enjoyed innovative signature cocktails along with a preview of Chef Hansji’s cuisine that included delicious lobster doughnuts, salmon and wild boar. The awards are presented to 12 men and women who exemplify a personal commitment to the community, have substantially contributed to society and possess an individual sense of style. This year’s awards will benefit the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund (HDSF). Hoop Dreams was founded in1996 by Susie Kay, a teacher at the Academy of Business & Finance at H.D. Woodson High School just east of the Anacostia River. Kay witnessed many students unable to attend college due to lack of finances or other obstacles, and created Hoop Dreams with partner Steve Boyd.

What began as a one-day, three-on-three basketball tournament has evolved into a vital community resource. Not only has Hoop Dreams has awarded over 700 scholarships totaling over $2 million, it provides job and internship connections and has partnered with Princeton Review to provide SAT prep courses.

The awards will be presented April 4 at Saks Fifth Avenue, Chevy Chase, and the winners will be featured in the April 2004 issue of Washington Life. Past winners include Bill Tiefel, Marcus Johnson, Peter Krough and Art Monk.
