Jack Evans

When he is not busy serving on D.C. council committees, pushing for more affordable housing in the District, or serving as Of Counsel at the Patton, Boggs law firm, Jack Evans is raising his 7-year-old triplets, Katharine, John and Christine, and their golden retriever Kayla (Evans' wife Noel tragically died last year after a long battle with cancer.)

Councilman for Ward 2, Jack Evans was first elected to the D.C. Council in 1991 and has been re-elected four times since. He divides his time between being an attorney and addressing the issues and challenges that arise every day in the eleven neighborhoods he represents, which include Chinatown, Shaw, Mt. Vernon Square , Logan Circle, Blagden Alley, Dupont Circle , Sheridan /Kalorama, Foggy Bottom/West End, Georgetown , Burleith, Hillandale and Downtown. He is chairman of the Council's Committee on Finance and Revenue which oversees the District's finances and tax policy and serves on the Council's Economic Development and Judiciary Committees, which he chaired from 1997 until 1999.

He has used these positions to work to promote tax breaks for working families and ensure the creation of more than 2000 downtown housing units. Additionally, Evans has championed reforms within the police department, which has facilitated a sharp reduction in D.C.'s crime rate. He was one of the first and most vocal supporters of the MCI Center and the new Convention Center. Evans regularly works with many neighborhood organizations, and attends numerous weekly community events.

Evans still makes time for charitable causes. He chaired the Foundry United Methodist Church “Concert for Life” AIDS fundraiser from 2001-2003 (raising more than $400,000) and he also served on the University Club's Community Affairs Committee from 1996 to 1999. He has been a leader for gay rights, and was successful in his efforts to repeal the District's anti-sodomy law and gain approval for D.C.'s “domestic partners” law. Such dedication and involvement have not gone unnoticed, and Evans has won community service awards from the Whitman Walker Clinic, Gay and Lesbian Activists and the Logan Circle Community Association, among numerous other groups. Additionally, in 2001 he was named the American Diabetes Association Father of the Year.

Evans has run for mayor before and it is expected that he will do so again.
