House of Sweden’s Long Saga

For more than three decades, Sweden has been searching for a proper Washington Embassy. With rented space at Watergate and then at 15th and M, they had handsome Swedish-designed interiors but no outside visibility ? a must in this public diplomacy era.

During the 1980’s, Count Wilheim Wachtmeister, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Sweden’s Ambassador here for 15 years with his prominent society wife Countess Ulla, a quintessential couple of Washington society, tried but failed to build on Embassy Row after eight expensive years of battling neighbors about parking problems.
