SHAPING ROOM by multi-disciplinary mixed media artist Gary Bergel invites you to take an “inscape” journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening. An “observer” since childhood with training in research science, secondary education and studio art, Bergel has, for the past few years, intentionally employed low-tech photographic tools and technology (disposable cameras, Palm Treo, iPhone, copy machines, ink jet printing on transparencies, etc.) to explore daily life, his outer and inner worlds, his commutes, travels, and mountain bike rides in the pastoral landscapes surrounding Metro DC.
One work captures a year’s worth of “Blooms Along the Way.”
In an almost playful manner of contemplative discovery and documentation the artist presents a sampling of his findings in specimen boxes, on the floor, from the ceiling, and as mixed media wall works. “Skies that Were” hang as a transparent screen in front of the ever-changing sky and cityscape outside of Touchstone’s new and architecturally unique exhibition areas; one or more new sky iPics will be added each week of this December exhibition.
To Bergel living is seeing; seeing is learning; learning is awakening.
Beauty, truth and spiritual realities are embedded in the ordinariness of life – the “shaping room” of every human being.
