Skinny mirrors, a department store goes shopping and “First Lady in Shoes” self-labels.

Saks Fifth Avenue has a new parent.

The biggest news of the year comes from a department store, which did a little shopping of its own. It was announced on Monday that Lord & Taylor will finalize its purchase of Saks Fifth Avenue at $2.4 billion before year’s end.

It’s good to know that even 1,300 years ago, people liked a little bling. Check out the Viking jewelry that was found on a Denmark farm recently.

Every week, Karl Lagerfeld seems to announce some new fashion collaboration or item he is re-designing. Let’s face it, anything this man touches turns into the next must-have. So it’s no surprise that he’s considered the “Pope of Fashion” by virtually everyone in the fashion industry.

Now let’s talk about the “First lady in shoes,” Tamara Mellon. She left the label she founded, Jimmy Choo, in 2011 and is re-emerging as a self-labeled fashion designer. Calling it “affordable luxury,” her line debuts online in 2014 and standalone stores in New York and London.

Speaking of designers, there’s a new one on the scene that Meryl Streep is raving about. Carin Rodebjer hand-makes her minimalist designs to stress the importance of the quality of fabrics. Read about her here.

Sadly, for up-and-coming designers, Fashion Star has been canceled. However, it’s being replaced with a six-part documentary on up-and-coming designers competing for $300,000 and a year of mentoring by a well-known designer, all courtesy of CFDA/Vogue. This documentary is set to air on Ovation in December.

In other news, I’m still on the fence about whether or not I want a skinny mirror. It’s right up there with great lighting in a dressing room. Perhaps I’m a glutton for punishment but I’d rather not leave the house/dressing room in something unflattering.

What is acceptable (and flattering)? A well-tailored suit. According to OK Cupid, it looks as though men who wear well-tailored suits have an advantage over less-stylish men when it comes to dating websites.  Then again, I’m sure Tom Ford would say that if you can afford one, you don’t need a dating site.

Beauty

There are some hot new nail colors out for fall but I say wear them now! Specifically created for the Lela Rose show, Deborah Lippmann created three punk rock shades to choose from.

…and while you’re contemplating the combinations of these colors to use at the same time, note that nail art is no longer “en vogue.” According to WWD, via Racked, nail polish sales are still at an all-time high but the growth is slowing.

There’s also a new fall MAC makeup collection coming out, and instead of an iconic entertainer promoting it, it’s three supermodels paying tribute to a fashion illustrator. Check out all the new color palettes and even a makeup case celebrating Antonio Lopez.

Need some new brushes to go with that collection? Here are eight must-have brushes.

Shopping

Shoes-as-wearable art is still in. Check out Kima & Zabete for Nine West’s beautiful Candyface wedges.

Looking for a floral frock instead? How about Carolina Herrera’s Rose Print dress?

To match with either, don’t forget Kayu’s red straw clutch with turquoise drop-in chain.
