Major corporations that once relied on the Chamber now opt increasingly to do their own lobbying, but the Chamber still has considerable influence, and Donohue, nearing 80, continues to be regarded by many as an effective voice for American business interests. Reed, a longtime GOP insider, represents the organization’s perceived Republican tilt. The Chamber of Commerce is on the same wavelength as Donald Trump on many issues (infrastructure, tax reform), but differs on others, notably Trump’s stance on free trade and what many see as his draconian immigration policies.
