DEDICATION TO DEMOCRACY: Concerned citizens gathered to mark four decades of Common Cause’s grassroots crusade for open government at a time when the issue of money in politics is of paramount concern. WARNING: Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, the nonpartisan activist group’s chairman, noted that the U.S. is approaching a “perfect storm” with regard to the “hundreds of millions of dollars flowing to candidates with no way of knowing who is giving it” and predicted a “reaction from an angry public” (much like the Watergate affair) to counter the excess. If not, he added, “we lose our democracy altogether.”
