In celebration of the United Nations International Volunteer Day, the Meridian International Center here in DC is partnering with Washington Parks and People and the DC Green Corps to plant over 100 trees in Oxon Run Park located in Southeast DC.

Meridian is incorporating the day with its own service initiative called The Global Leaders Service Initiative. The common goal of the combined projects is to make an impact in communities through innovation and participation in service.

“Bringing beneficiaries into the solution is empowering in and of itself, giving them a greater voice and stake in community volunteer efforts. Volunteers, and even more so, volunteer leaders, are often the last to get recognized and, with a little acknowledgment and a larger platform to share their story, we can make an even larger impact,” says Director of Global Service Leaders Initiative at the Meridian International Center, Meg Poole.

Now in over 100 countries, Meridian’s GSLI Program connects volunteer leaders around the world to unite under the common goals of service and volunteerism.
