For the eighth year, the Discovery Channel and the American Film Institute turn Silver Spring into an international destination with their ever-growing documentary film festival Silverdocs.
By Joel Sparks
The Silverdocs week-long celebration of nonfiction film opened with Freakonomics, including appearances by producer Chad Troutwine and three of the many stellar documentarians involved in bringing these bestselling books to the screen. Upcoming highlights include the man-versus-internet struggle Barbershop Punk, featuring local loadstones Henry Rollins and Ian Mackaye; a miniature backyard village overrun with Nazi dolls in Marwencol; the 3,300 patents of the elderly Japanese man in The Invention of Dr. Nakamats; rich Americans paying to ride in Russian rockets in Space Tourists; and a series on the worldwide battle against war, sponsored by the U.S. Institute of Peace.
