Muhammad Ali and his longtime trainer and friend Angelo Dundee were awarded the first One America
Award at the National Italian American Foundation Gala Dinner on October 28th at the Washington
Hilton. President Clinton introduced Ali. Other honorees (there were 50 in all) at the $350-a-plate
gala were Dick Vermiel, 1999 Super Bowl champion coach who received the Special Achievement Award in
Sports; John Paul DeJoria, owner and chairman of Paul Mitchell Systems; Joseph P. Nacchio, chairman
and CEO of Qwest Communications International; James J. Schiro, CEO of Pricewaterhouse Coopers; and
Italian fashion designer Miuccia Prada.
