On October l, the National Gallery of Art opened "Art for the Nation," an exhibition of works added to the collection over the past 10 years, many donated by the late Paul Mellon and John Hay Whitney. "Art for the Nation: Collecting for a New Century" features 140 recently acquired pieces of art, including paintings by Jan Brueghel the Elder, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, and Vincent Van Gogh; sculptures by Auguste Rodin; and photography by Charles Sheeler and William Henry Fox Talbot. This varied and extensive exhibit was underwritten by the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the recently-merged telecommunications company. The Foundation Is also funding the development of special content for the National Gallery website, which will include 15 interactive studies of works in the exhibition.
