Over $100,000 Raised for AIDS Orphans
Three hundred supporters of the Nyumbani Orphanage filled the East Hall of Union Station for a
fundraising dinner on September 19. Kathleen Matthews of WJLA-Channel 7 presided as Master of
Ceremonies and the Urban Nation H.I.P.H.O.P. Gospel Choir provided the evening's entertainment.
The Reverend William L. George, S.J., President of Georgetown Preparatory School, was honored
for seven years of fundraising service to the orphanage. Founded by a Georgetown
University Jesuit, the Reverend Angelo D'Agostino, S.J., M.D., Nyumbani is the
first hospice for HIV positive orphans in Kenya where the number of children
who are orphaned by the AIDS virus has reached pandemic proportions. The event
netted over $ 100,000 and will allow Nyumbani to expand its facilities and serve
more children.
