An invitation-only black-tie dinner gala at the Library of Congress on Sept. 7,co-hosted by First Lady Laura Bush and Librarian of Congress James Billington,preceded the inaugural National Book Festival. Inspired by the highly successfulTexas Book Festival founded by Mrs. Bush, the event was an attempt toencourage Americans to develop a life-long love of reading.
