This nine-week, internationally renowned music festival comprises more than 200events, including orchestral concerts, chamber music, opera, contemporarymusic, master classes, lectures, and kids’ programs. Telluride Film Festival

Over 5000 people come to this film festival each year despite the fact that programmingcontent is not released until opening day. The program consists of filmpresentations, three tributes to distinguished talents, seminars, panel discussions,a picnic, and many other film-related events. Telluride Bluegrass Festival

Four days of live music in a beautiful outdoor setting. This is the festival’s 29th yearand continues to draw fans from around the world. Performances take place in thespectacular box canyon in the San Juan Mountains, making this festival standapart from any other. Tickets go on sale in mid April. 19th Annual Chicago Blues Festival

During these four days, Grant Park will be packed with bluesmusicians and enthusiasts. This year honors Muddy Waters. Two of last year’s performers wereChuck Berry and Otis Rush. This is the world’s largest free admission Blues Festivalwith over half a million people in attendance. Tickets are hard to get; yet manypeople watch from afar and enjoy the atmosphere, including sideshow performances.The festival runs from noon to 9:30 p.m. daily. Figawi Race Weekend

Generally considered the largest sailboat race on the East Coast, the Figawi sailboatand powerboat race usually draws more than 200 boats to compete from Hyannisto Nantucket and back again. Starting line is at the HyannisPort Jetty at 10 a.m. onMay 25. A cocktail party greets contestants in Nantucket, and the following day isfilled with an awards ceremony, afternoon clambake, and evening Memorial Dayparty. The kickoff event is the Figawi Charity Ball, held the preceding weekendat the Sheraton Hyannis Hotel and Resort. Ball begins at 7 p.m. and includes dancing,silent auction, bar and hors d’oeuvres and casino. Tickets are $50 per person forthe ball, $1000 for a table with 10 tickets. Proceeds aid local charities. 102nd US Open Golf Championship

Bethpage State Park in Long Island has been chosen as the site for the US Open.This is the first time in history that a daily-fee public course has been chosen. 42,500spectators are expected to visit the Black Course daily. Tiger Woods will be amongthe competing professionals.

Freihofer’s Jazz Festival at Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the jazz festival at this music-filled weekend. Spoleto Festival USA

Spoleto Festival USA originated in 1977 as the American accompaniment to theFestival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. This internationally-acclaimed 17-day festivalincludes over 100 performances in opera, theater, dance, and other types ofmusic. This season includes The Flying Dutchman, The South African Carmen,The Bear and Afterplay, the Dance Theater of Harlem, and many more. The Festivalfinale takes place in Middleton Place, America’s oldest landscaped gardens. Enjoya fireworks display over the Ashley river set to music. Tickets for performancesrange from $15–$85.

Spoleto Festival Opening Weekend Gala

This is the social event of the festival season. Enjoy a performance by the world-renownedDance Theater of Harlem and then descend into the exhibition hall thatwill be decorated as if guests are under the stars in Africa. Bermuda Cruising Rally

The West Marine Bermuda Cup will travel from Hampton, VA to St. George’swith an optional return. A bluewater fun race combined with a relaxing cruise. Fleetwill gather at Salt Ponds Marina in Hampton, VA on June 15th for two daysof inspections and briefings. The Royal Ascot Races

This prestigious horse race is almost 300 years old and one can expect the royalfamily to attend. Traditionally, at 2 p.m. each day, the Queen travels around theracecourse in a carriage before the races begin. Americans can apply to theAmerican Embassy in London for tickets since they hold several hundred on reserve.Witness 24 races over four days including the Gold Cup. Glyndebourne Opera Festival

Glyndebourne, located 54 miles south of London, is one of the world’s best knownopera houses. Tickets are understandably hard to find, given that they are offered firstto Members of the Festival Society, to which there is a 40-year wait, and then to those whoare patient enough to be on the waiting list. This festival season will feature six operas,most notably new productions of Iphigénie en Aulide, Euryanthe and Carmen. Black tiedress is customary for the opera festival. Cannes Film Festival

The festival first took place in 1946 when it was a small tourist and social event.Today, it’s considered to be the most important film festival in the world. Thefestival’s aim is to contribute to the progress of quality motion picture arts throughoutthe world. Deauville Horse Races

Located in Upper Normandy (famous for its horses), the races at Deauville take placefrom May-October each year, with the racing pinnacle during the month of August.More than 2 billion francs have been bet on horses running at Deauville which is arecord amount. This glamorous seaside resort on the Channel coast is where theEuropean social scene culminates each year. Races take place on the world-famousDeauville La Touques and Clairfontaine tracks. French Open Grand Slam Tennis Tournament

The French Open at Roland Garros will be celebrating its 111th anniversary this year.This tournament is the second of the four majors. The world’s biggest international trade fair for publishing. Last year 259,840 peoplevisited the fair. Palio

In the beautiful town of Siena, the Palio consumes the inhabitants and spectators forweeks. The town is divided into 17 contrade and 10 sections are chosen to train a horse tocompete in this yearly race. On July 2, the Piazza del Campo is transformed into acrowded arena where this dangerous and exciting horse race takes place. Young boysare trained to be flag bearers and perform flag throwing in traditional style.Participating town members wear period dress and display their contrade’s emblem.The contrades have their own name, banner, and church. Observe Siena’s traditionsand customs during the days surrounding Palio. Entrance is free although it is verycrowded. It is possible to rent a place with a view of the event.

One of the world’s most challenging races. This 78 lap race is complete with narrowtracks, hilly areas, tunnels, and sharp corners. Each year, this prestigious race bringsthousands to Monte Carlo. Monaco Red Cross Ball

Europe’s biggest charity event, the Red Cross Ball, is held annually at the Salle des Etoilesat the Sporting Club in Monte Carlo under the patronage of Monaco’s royal family.Celebrated for its fireworks displays, tombola prizes, and art giveaways. Running of the Bulls

The Running of the Bulls or The Fiesta de San Fermin’s (the patron saint of wine makers)takes place every summer. The high-light is the encierro or Bull Run which takesplace every morning at 8am. The 800-meter run leads to the bull ring and providesa dangerous and thrilling race for participants. Though the Bull Run is the mostfamous aspect of the festival, there are also parties, bull fights, concerts and parades.The opening celebration is chupinazo at noon on July 6. Due to the event’s popularity,accommodations are scarce but plans can be made through tour operators.
