Friends Worth Fighting For Muhammad Ali, the man who some deem “athlete of thecentury” was honored at this year’s Best Buddies Ball. The11th annual event was held at Ethel Kennedy’s NorthernVirginia estate, where nephew and Best Buddies founderAnthony Shriver played host to over 900 guests, includingleading figures from the sports and entertainment fields,celebrities—including actors Fred Savage and TomArnold—government officials, famous artists, and majorphilanthropists. Guests were greeted at the door by Euniceand Sargent Shriver before being escorted to the side lawn,where they enjoyed entertainment, dinner, and dancing.Beneath two huge tents, guests feasted on a dinner at tablesadorned with miniature boxing rings made of white roses.Pat O’Brien and Nancy O’Dell, hosts of the television program“Access Hollywood,” served asMasters of Ceremonies, while thePointer Sisters provided lively entertainment.The evening also featured alive auction, where four gloves autographedby Ali sold for $5,000 each.The event raised over $750,000 forBest Buddies, which is dedicated toenhancing the lives of people withmental retardation by providing opportunitiesfor socialization and employment.
