Considered one of the most prestigious social events in Washington, the 41st annual Opera Ball once
again gathered together leaders of the diplomatic, political, corporate, and arts communities for a
splendid evening of dining and dancing. Keeping with tradition, ballgoers first attended one of the many
exquisite dinner parties hosted by ambassadors at their official residences and embassies throughout the
city. Following dinner, guests convened at the lovely Kalorama residence of the French Ambassador for
dessert and dancing. Renowned French designer Christian Lacroix worked his design magic that evening,
creating a French millennium fantasy. The Opera Ball is sponsored each year by the Women's Committee, and
raises funds for the Washington Opera.
Hosts: the Ambassador of France and Mrs. Bujon de l'Estang
Ball Chair: the Honorable Jane DeGraff Sloat
Women's Committee Chair: Mrs. E. Edward Bruce
With Christian Lacroix's name behind the decor, it should come as no surprise that the
details were nothing short of perfection. The façade of the residence was dramatically
lit as guests entered through plush red velvet drapery. Once inside, beautiful
candelabras flickered near stunning opera ball gowns prominently displayed throughout the
interior. Even a dainty chocolate evening slipper brimming with fresh fruit, sat perched
upon the dessert table. How ever could the hard-working designer recoup from such an
extraordinary feat? Guests say Lacroix had some fun of his own -cutting a rug on the dance
floor. |
