The Preservation Society of Newport County's Weekend of Coaching The Gilded Age Revisited
Trotting horses, cracking whips and trumpeters' calls from antique carriage tops brought the Gilded Age back to Newport for a few memorable days in August during the Newport Preservation Society's much-anticipated "Weekend of Coaching," a spectacular celebration every bit as rarefied as its mannered, traditionally-attired enthusiasts. Charles T. Matheson Sr., of The Plains, Va., served as chairman of the 16-strong committee at the triennial event. Capital-area residents (many in residence at their Newport homes) were sighted along with Newport's beau monde during the weekend of events including a grand ball at the Breakers Saturday night.
