17th Annual Leukemia Ball
Record Setting Event Raises $3.1 million
Over 2,500 guests attended this year’s Leukemia Ball on March 20 to raise
$3.1 million for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Blues Brothers Dan
Akroyd and Jim Belushi and CBS’s “The King of Queens” star Kevin James
entertained the well-dressed crowd inside the red, white and blue lighted
Washington Convention Center. Prior to dinner, lymphoma survivor and author
of “The Cancer War,” Anthony Herrera introduced a brief video that told some
touching stories of people living with and fighting cancer.
Much of the proceeds came from silent and live auctions and a raffle, which included a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CLK320 Cabriolet as the grand prize. The
$2 million net profit will benefit research, advocacy and support for blood
cancer patients. The event was originally started by people from the accounting
industry and has grown into a major social and networking event.
