Diplomatic Reception Rooms Donors’ Reception Donors to the Department of State Diplomatic Reception Rooms had the chance to see the effects of their generosity at the annual reception on April 23. The State Department’s collection of art and antiques reflects the donations of private citizens and philanthropists for the last forty years, and includes many rare works. Secretary of State Colin Powell thanked donors for their contributions and highlighted the vision of the late Clem Conger, a former White House and State Department curator who died in January. Conger believed that the Department of State needed a dignified and beautiful place in which to entertain diplomats, and his vision resulted in the impressive art collection displayed in the rooms today. According to Director Gail Serfaty, memorial contributions in his name have totaled over $100,000.
