Helen Hayes Awards Celebrate 20 Years

The 2004 Helen Hayes Awards were presented in grand fashion at the Kennedy Center on May 10. Arena Stage walked away with eight out of the 26 awards, including four for the gospel infused musical, “Crowns”. This year’s awards ceremony, directed by Eric Shaeffer, marked 20 years of recognizing excellence in Washington theater. According to Helen Hayes Executive Director Linda Levy Grossman, Washington produces more theater than any city in the nation outside of New York.

Following the ceremony, theater lovers, thespians, awardees and artists gathered on the Roof Terrace at the annual Ovation gala for a large cast party celebrating the winners and nominees.
