2004 Jan Karski Award for Moral Courage
The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt
The Foundation for Moral Courage honored political prisoner Ingrid Betancourt,
a French and Colombian citizen, with the 2004 Jan Karski Award for Moral
Courage at the residence of French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte and his
wife, Marie-Cecile, on November 8. Betancourt was a Colombian presidential
candidate until her capture two years ago by the Colombian FARC guerilla
force. The award was presented to her daughter, Melanie Delloye, by
Philip Lynch, chairman emeritus of the organization. Ambassador Levitte and
Colombian Ambassador Luis Alberto Moreno noted that the award has become
a symbol of hope for the 3,000 political hostages held by Colombian guerilla
forces. Filmmakers Victoria Bruce and Karin Hayes received the 2004 Moral
Courage Film Award for “The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt,” acknowledged
as a symbol of the gravity of the situation that might ultimately
