The British Ambassador Salutes Social Secretary Amanda Downes

SUMMER SOIREE:
British Ambassador Sir David Manning and Lady Manning paid tribute to the embassy’s longtime social secretary, Amanda Downes, with a summer soiree at their residence on June 15. Downes was installed as a Member of the British Empire during ceremonies at Buckingham Palace on May 24.
A-LIST ATTENDANCE:
The 300 guests proved that the ever-so-modest Downes has become a staple of Washington society herself. Among them were Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Stephen G. Breyer, Kathleen and Chris Ma hews, Aniko Gaal Scho , Togo West, Nina and Philip Pillsbury, Senator Paul Sarbanes, Lucky Roosevelt, Diana Prince, Kate Lehrer, and Andrea Mitchell. §

Downes has been at her post since 1989 and has successfully planned thousands of events for fi ve consecutive ambassadors.
