Following the success of their previous Life Essentials two part show,Art Whino presented a one night only event starring hip hop legend and W.H.A.L.E.R Honorary chair, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of the iconic trio Run-DMC. Performing a selection of his hit tracks, including “It’s Tricky” and “Run’s House,” it was clear that the Run-DMC legend was doing something, as he said in his own words, “More important than just being DMC”.
Having recently found out that he was adopted and in foster care as a child, DMC felt that he was in a position to help W.H.A.L.E.R’s Creations, with its goal of promoting foster care and adoption through the arts and media.
DMC commented to Washington Life: “I believe that the opportunities I was given allowed me to become who I am today.
His ‘foundation in hip-hop” enabled him opportunities he believes would otherwise not have been available to him. He now represents thousands of adopted and foster children, helping give them a voice. Through a series of events bringing together art, music and most importantly people, Art Whino have established a regular event at the D.C. Portals Theatre (1236 Maryland Ave, SW). One simple goal brings Art Whino and the aforementioned organizations together: highlighting some of the challenges faced by many, both in our local community and those further afield, in hope of making changes for the better through their fundraising efforts. An applaudable precedence being set that will hopefully encourage other art organizations in D.C to follow suit.
