Canadian ambassador to the United States Gary Doer welcomed Cal Ripken, Jr. to over one hundred guests during a VIP reception as Ripken was recognized for serving children through his role as the founder of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. Ripken established this organization in 2001 to bring positive mentors and team sports to youth in America’s most under-served areas. Naming the foundation after his father, Ripken has met hundreds of the children he has supported through the foundation’s baseball camps, or through his travels as a State Department Special Public Diplomacy Envoy to China and Nicaragua, where he introduced baseball as a tool to spread goodwill.
