Washington Life hosted its fifth annual The Young and The Guest List (YGL) event April 15th. The theme this year was “A Return to Glamour.” Between the historic venue of The Washington Club, the magical stylings of Events by Andre Wells, Design Cuisine and Janet Flowers, and 400 of the metro area’s top 40-and-under movers and shakers, the night truly was glamorous.
The YGL is a list of 250 of the most influential Washingtonians under 40. Collectively known as The Young and The Guest List, these movers and shakers were chosen by committee from across professions, including politics, media, diplomacy, law, finance, real estate, sports, entertainment, the arts, technology, and philanthropy. For the first time, professional titles have been included alongside the names of those listed.
Last year, Washington Life followed the zeitgeist of a new administration and the injection of new personalities and power players into the Washington social scene by hosting the event in NOMA and completely transforming the top floor of the then-empty Capitol Plaza building. The goal was to capture the feeling of starting with a blank canvas. The theme of this year ‘s event was “Return to Glamour.”

“We felt it was important to acknowledge the city’s rich history by hosting the event at a landmark venue once known salons that blended power, grace and society.” Washington Life Executive Editor Michael M. Clements said. “We are grateful and excited that we found such a place in the Washington Club, the former Patterson Mansion on Dupont Circle. We also love the fact that the mansion was built by a newspaper editor and was for many years the epicenter of power and society in the nation’s capital.”
The Washington Club was founded in 1891 for “literary purposes, mutual improvement and the promotion of social intercourse.” It moved into its current clubhouse at 15 Dupont Circle in 1951. Known as the Patterson mansion, it was built in 1900-1902 by Chicago Tribune Editor Cissy Medill Patterson of Chicago, the daughter of Joseph Medill, owner of the Chicago Tribune and progenitor of the Medill/Patterson/McCormick newspaper dynasty. Historic citations granted to the property include “District of Columbia Historic Site” (1964), “National Register of Historic Places” (1972), and the “1974 Massachusetts Avenue Historic District.”
This year Washington Life partnered with Dannia Hakki and Sherry Moeller of boutique public relations firm MoKi Media, who
did an outstanding job producing a most talked about gift bag. Here is what guests received in this year’s goodie bags, created by MoKi Media and designed by interior designer Christopher Boutlier. Gift bag items included Badgley Mischka parfum replica and Badgley Mischka Couture fragrance sample, Design Army Note Card set, Luxxery Beta Enzyme Cleanser, Luxxery Keep-it-snappy facial $60 Gift Certificate, Cibu Pho Finish hair spray, Robert Andrew Salon and Spa Redken Shampoo and Color Extend, mini Maker’s Mark bottles, Queen B Designs faceted beaded earrings, Karen Millen crystal square stud earrings, Lebanese Taverna $25 gift card, Stella Artois Chalice glasses, Alchimie Forever gift certificates, Sahara Dance Free Belly dancing lesson, Adeler Jewelers charms, Fresh of Georgetown $25 Gift Certificate, Darlington House $45 gift certificate, Virtual Golf Girl golf towels, Pevonia Botanica skin care products, Park Hyatt cookies and United Nations Foundation USBs among other fabulous treats! Contact Sherry Moeller sherry.moeller@mokimedia.com directly for a final list of gift bag contents.
In addition, fashion sponsor Karen Millen made sure that the ladies from the Washington Life team looked lovely
in “glamorous cocktail” attire. While WL executive editor and WLTV host Michael M Clements was outfitted by Ermenegildo Zegna in Tysons Galleria.
Event Planner Andre Wells once again took the reins as the event’s maestro. “Andre is one of the best events planners not only in Washington, D.C., but in the nation,” Clements said. “His work is also regularly seen in L.A. and New York and we were thrilled to have him back again this year. He always comes to the table with fresh new ideas and some surprises.”
Finally, there was the YGL After-Party at chic Darlington House restaurant, mere steps from the Washington Club, where stalwart guests continued celebrating until the wee hours with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and late night sounds by the resident DJ.
The buzz around this year’s list was greater than ever, due in part to the sheer number of new gatekeepers in Washington, especially at the White House and on Capitol Hill. To recap: of the 250 people listed on the 2010 YGL, 46 are public servants: members of Congress, Hill staffers, White House staff, and presidential appointees. And they are all under 40. The list is can be viewed on vps3.washingtonlife.com here.
