The Oval Room has seen presidents come and go, congressional staff change over, and even made it through a Top Chef season – and it’s still as good as ever.

A recent visit to restaurateur Ashok Bajaj‘s staple dining room reminded me what good dining in DC is all about. The Oval Room sits, a quiet classic, on the edge of Lafayette Square. Tucked away on the edge of political power, the sleek dining room and cozy patio is the perfect reminder of everything good and right about sophisticated eating in DC.
Mixologist Brent Kroll crafts the perfect cocktail, be sure to ask about his newest twist on the Dark and Stormy. Chef Tony Conte‘s food is flawless, classic, and fresh. The signature beet salad stands out as a favorite, sprinkled with microgreens.
And a fresh cut of halibut is a standout with the perfect sauce.
My favorite dessert by far was a ricotta cheesecake with white coffee ice cream. The white coffee ice cream tasted exactly like a morning coffee at the beach – a mix between roasted and salty.
A second, third, or eighth visit to The Oval Room is encouraged. It is like visiting an old friend you haven’t seen in a while and missed every time.
The Oval Room is located at 800 Connecticut Avenue Northwest, call (202) 463-8700 for more information.
