After turning a ripe 85 this year, DC’s grand dame The Mayflower was puzzling over how to memorialize the milestone.
The hotel’s food and beverage managers went through 30 different samples of champagne before settling on the perfect bubbly concoction to celebrate.
Matthew Boettcher, the Mayflower’s director of restaurants, said that 150 cases of its new 85th anniversary champagne were created specifically for the celebration.
With only 25 cases left, Boettcher said that the Mayflower’s anniversary bubbly has been a hit with longtime Washingtonians who crave the good stuff. “It’s been flying out the door,” Boettcher said. “Our bar and restaurant patrons just love it.”
On Wednesday, the Mayflower’s Promenade Restaurant and Bar were opened to the hotel’s friends and longtime customers to mark the kickoff of the holiday season with a celebration of the commemorative champagne.
The evening’s guests left with goodie bags filled with Godiva chocolates courtesy of Godiva’s Jennifer Oh and Saks Fifth Avenue discount cards.
“The Mayflower knows how to celebrate in style,” Boettcher said.
