Calling all Tennis Fans – The Champions Series is touching down at the Verizon Center this September and is made up of quite the roster!
By Ericha Richards
On September 23rd, the district will welcome tennis legends Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, and Michael Chang as part of the 2011 Champions Series Tennis Circuit. Washington DC is one of 12 nationwide stops on the agenda for the tour this year. Starting September 22nd in Fort Lauderdale, FL, the 30+ champions will travel over the course of five weeks in cities like Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Boston and, of course, DC, to compete for a $1 million prize pool that will be split equally among the top three players at the end of the season.
Each one-day tournament will be played by four of the seven champions in the circuit this season. Play will yield daily rankings that will contribute to an overall score that is totaled at the end of the 5-week tour. There will be one-set semi-finals competing for ranking points, culminating with the winners contending for the title in an eight-game pro-set championship match. For those of you who dont speak tennis, that means that instead of playing six games during one set (where there are 3 to 6 sets in one match), it is only one set of eight games – hope you caught all of that.
Other champions that are included in the tournament are John McEnroe, Björn Borg, and Mats Wilander. Tickets and VIP passes are available now starting at $35. Tickets are available online or at the Verizon Center Box Office.
