Spring is in the air, and we all know what is lurking just around the corner – swimsuit season. With that in mind, Washington will soon be the home of numerous racing events that will benefit specific charities through donations and by raising awareness. With races varying from fun-runs with the family to full-on marathons, there really is no excuse to be sitting at home finishing off the last of that Valentine’s Day candy. Here are some of our favorite charitable runs.

Scope it Out 5K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness

When: Sunday, March 25th, 9:00 am
Where: Freedom Plaza
Why: According the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S., excluding skin cancers, and is expected to be the cause of about 51,690 deaths during 2012. To participate in the 7th Annual Scope it Out 5K Run/Walk, click Here.

RunWild! Charity Participant in the Rock and Roll USA Marathon and Half-Marathon

When: Saturday, March 17, 8:00 am
Where: D.C. Armory
Why: This is the perfect race for animal lovers and confident runners to make a difference. RunWild! will raise money for veterinary care of wildlife in Africa, and help you take “run a marathon” off of your bucket list. For more information, click Here.

Move4Mobility 5K & 5 Miler

When: Saturday, April 14th, 8:00 am
Where: Hains Point, East Potomac Park
Why: This event will be making its official debut this year and plans on donating 100% of the proceeds to non-profit organizations dedicated to finding a cure for disease that result in immobility. These diseases in Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy and Spinal Injuries. For additional details, click Here.

Race to Stop the Silence 8K (Kids’ 1K)

When: Sunday, April 29th, 9:00am
Where: Freedom Plaza
Why: Child Sexual abuse is an ongoing epidemic in the U.S. Help break the silence and reach out to abused children by participating in the 8th Annual Race to Stop the Silence 8K Race/5K fun run and walk (and kids’ 1K). This event is a great way to help children while spending time with your own. Visit their official Website for more information.

Lawyers Have Heart 10K Run & Fun Walk

When: Saturday, June 9th, 7:30 am
Where: The Washington Harbour
Why: Proceeds from this race will benefit the American Heart Association and raise awareness of heart disease and strokes. Run along one of Washington’s many scenic routes while making a difference. Click Here for more information.
