Stepping In

Arena Stage's lively, interactive tradition

by Dara Klatt

Each December in Washington, one holiday tradition practically vibrates off the stage—and pulls the audience along with it. Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show at Arena Stage is the seasonal performance that doesn’t ask audiences to sit politely in their seats. Instead, from the moment guests arrive and are handed noisemakers to shake throughout the show, it’s clear this is a celebration meant to be clapped, stomped, and cheered through.

Staged in Arena’s in-the-round Fichandler theater, the show features the world-renowned company dedicated to the African American art form of stepping. The result is a high-energy, family-friendly spectacle that celebrates the season through rhythm and community.

A live DJ keeps the beats rolling while dancers in fur and sparkles (and fairy wings!) build an atmosphere of festivity. Throughout the performance, children, parents, grandparents, and spirited attendees of every age are invited down to the stage area to learn dance moves, stomp along, and become part of the action.

Even longtime fans have new delights to look forward to each season, from inventive themed numbers to playful battles between mischievous holiday characters. For many Washington families, it has become a cherished annual ritual: one part dance spectacle, one part cultural celebration, one part irresistible party.
