As one of 1.5 million children evacuated to the presumed safety of the countryside from British cities during WWII, Doreen Drewry Lehr launches, “A Girl’s War: A Childhood Lost in Britain’s WWII Evacuation,” her first novel. The launch party was held at  Peacock Cafe in Georgetown Thursday June 24th. Guests snacked on Peacock Cafe’s local mushroom and goat cheese tarts, vine ripe tomato and fresh mozzarella skewers, tuna tartar and seaweed salad with wasabi dot, and in honor of the World Cup, South Africa-inspired beef or vegetable Bobotie with saffron Greek yogurt.

Piper Heidsieck Champagne was also served. “A Girl’s War” marks Drewry Lehr’s first novel, as she chronicles her experiences and also provides a historical analysis of the times. Lehr recalls how she was separated from her parents, and works to answer the question “How could my parents send me away?” throughout the novel.
