Fashion icons remember 9/11, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, a Valentino musical, and why women are obsessed with shoes.

It was a busy week in the fashion world with Fashion’s Night Out and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, for which we have given you a complete wrap-up with the best-of-the-best highlights and recaps.
But first, it’s important to reflect on terrible tragedies of 9/11 and remember what gives us so much freedom in this world. Yesterday, each of us took to Twitter and Facebook to post on where we were during this day and how we will never forget those that are lost. See some of the biggest names in fashion reflect on where they were during that time.
Still, the week prior was filled with a fashion frenzy of sorts as fashion week kicked off in New York. See a recap in pictures here. Not enough of a fix? Check out one very famous model, dancing during the fete. Also, it seems as though designers sent fashion to the dogs – their dogs. See which designers dressed their pooches up and had them strut the runway.
Fashion’s Night Out brings out not just a bevy of celebrities, but a bevy of limited edition product as well. Check out what Jason Wu was autographing at Bergdorf Goodman.
Also a huge buzz during Fashion’s Night Out was Missoni for Target’s Pop-up store. Rumor has it that within hours of the store opening, the shelves were “picked clean”, forcing it to shut down early.
Another pop-up store getting a lot of “attention” – Nicola Formichetti’s. May we say “ahem” avant-garde?
These days the basic heel is no longer good enough. It seems more and more designers are taking to designing wearable art for your feet, possible replacing other accessories you would usually wear. In lieu of this, Nicholas Kirkwood has announced a flagship store in New York. Check out some of his designs here.
… and speaking of shoes, a new documentary may have finally revealed why women are obsessed with being well-heeled. Read the interview with Outnet.com’s Stephanie Phair here.
… so what about comfort, when so many women are more concerned with style? Rumor has it, on a bride’s big day, the reverse goes into effect. Check out what new type of shoe is becoming popular for the big event.
In other wedding news, it’s time to bid adieu to Priscilla of Boston. It seems the owners are now more in favor of designer diffusion lines, being sold through their sister brand David’s Bridal.
What is it that Valentino has that Karl Lagerfeld doesn’t? A pending musical. That’s right. Rumors are swirling that Valentino’s life story might be sung, as opposed to just documented. We guess that he’s in favor of this idea, since he took to karaoke during fashion week this past week.
… and speaking of the music and fashion worlds colliding. Check out the preview of Jean Paul Gaultier’s interview with Lady Gaga.
In designer news, Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham and Sarah Burton are nominated for 2011’s British Fashion Awards.
Also something to celebrate is CFDA’s announcement that they are sending Prabal Gurung, Ohne Titel, as well as eight other designers to Paris Fashion Week.
One designer you will never see at Fashion Week: Nicola Formichetti. That’s because his clothing line only exists in the ‘Virtual World’.
What you can shop, Zara. It’s ecommerce site is finally up and running in the U.S.!
Looking for something a little more “unique”? Vogue.com announces a partnership with Moda Operandi, now allowing you to shop the runway instantly.
With Fashion Week going on, here is a rundown of all the shows and what you missed so far:
- Richard Chai, Cushnie et Ochs, Gary Graham
- Rachel Comey, Jenni Kayne, Steven Alan
- The Row, Jason Wu, Doo.Ri
- Peter Som, Luca Luca, Imitation of Christ
- Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung, Band of Outsiders
- Ruffian, Lacoste, Lyn Devon
- Diane Von Furstenberg, Victoria Beckham, Derek Lam
Also, don’t miss all the runway videos, including Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Prabal Gurung.
… and worth its own mention. Helmut Lang returned to the runway with a Richard Serra-inspired show. It’s worth checking out.
… but what about some of the bigger names in the business? Why no recap on them? Well, according to Phillip Bloch, the digital age is to be thanked for that. With piracy/copycatting at an all-time high, more elite designers are taking to private fashion shows.
So with what we have seen in the recaps, what are some of the major trends that are popping up for next spring?
