J.S. Bach
Prelude & Fugue in D Major, BWV 532
Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243

C.P.E. Bach
Magnificat in D Major, WQ 15

These two settings of the Magnificat, Mary’s expression of ecstatic joy from the Gospel according to St. Luke, reveal the genius of two generations of the Bach family, J.S. Bach and his brilliantly innovative son C.P.E. Bach. Performed together, the two settings beautifully demonstrate the evolution from the Baroque to the emerging Classical aesthetic. The program, and the season, are rounded off by yet another showcase of the Skinner organ, with the performance of J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D Major, BWV 532.
