In 1874, Verdi composed this brilliant, theatrical Requiem as a memorial to his close friend, Alessandro Manzoni, whose novel, I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) was a powerful force in the unification of Italy.
Verdi conceived the Requiem as a patriotic act celebrating the Italian republic. The music of the Requiem covers the range of human emotions from terror, shame and sadness to hope and exaltation.
