The Dish: Tasty Tacos and Two Hundred Tequilas

El Centro D.F. brings the tastes of Mexico to 14th St. this May.

Area gastronomes have long complained that it’s impossible to find a good taco in the District. Chef Richard Sandoval – the culinary wunderkind behind Masa 14 and Zengo, to name just a few – means to rectify that situation this May by opening up El Centro D.F., a three-level taqueria and tequileria on 14th St. NW. The ground level will be devoted to casual dining and tacos to go, the second floor will feature a bar offering 200 tequilas and mezcals and the roof will boast two additional bars.

Tacos al Pastor with adobo marinade pork belly, cilantro, onion and grilled pineapple is one of the eatery’s signature offerings, but El Centro D.

F. won’t offer only tacos. Shrimp and crab enchiladas are dressed up with Oaxaca cheese, corn, rajas and crema fresco, while the carne asada is complemented by sautéed chile poblano, chimichurri, chile morita sauce, sweet corn tamale and charro beans.

If you’re in the mood for a cocktail or three, make sure to get one of mixologist Brennan Adams’ creative concoctions. A highlight is the Michelada Tochino, a twist on the traditional Mexican beer cocktail featuring house-smoked bacon.
